Frequently Asked Questions
What oil should I use with my generator?
Select the oil used based on the recommendation in the owner’s manual for your specific product. For more information about the types of oil available, choosing an oil according to operating conditions, and more, review our blog.
What gasoline should I use in my generator?
We recommend using unleaded gasoline with a maximum ethanol content of 10%. Do not use E85 gasoline or any other Flex Fuels because they contain a higher percentage of ethanol.
What size propane tank should I use with my dual fuel or inverter generator?
We recommend using a standard 20- or 40-pound propane tank.

What is Watch Guard, and where can I learn more about this technology?
Watch Guard continuously measures levels of carbon monoxide in the area around your generator. If the Watch Guard detects a dangerous amount of CO, it automatically shuts off the generator and sounds an alert. Read more about this lifesaving technology here.
How do I properly start my A-iPower generator?
To start your A-iPower generator, follow these steps:
1. Check the oil and fuel: Ensure the oil level is correct and the fuel tank is full with fresh fuel.
2. Set the choke: If the engine is cold, move the choke lever to the “Closed” position. If the engine is warm, leave the choke in the “Open” position.
3. Turn on the fuel valve: Open the fuel valve to allow fuel to flow into the carburetor.
4. Start the engine: Turn the ignition switch to the “On” position and pull the recoil starter cord (or press the electric start button if available).
5. Adjust the choke: Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke to the “Open” position as the engine warms up.
Always follow the manufacturer's specific instructions in the user manual.
Can I run my A-iPower generator continuously, or should it be turned off periodically?
While A-iPower generators are designed for continuous operation, allow the generator to cool down and take periodic breaks, especially during extended use. Running a generator for long hours without breaks can lead to overheating. We recommend shutting it off after 8-12 hours of continuous operation to let it rest, then performing a quick check of the oil and fuel before restarting.
How do I safely connect appliances to an A-iPower generator?
To safely connect appliances to your A-iPower generator:
1. Plug directly into the generator: Whenever possible, plug appliances directly into the generator’s outlets rather than using an extension cord, especially for high-wattage devices.
2. Use the correct extension cords: Ensure you use heavy-duty, grounded extension cords rated for outdoor use and capable of handling the total wattage of the devices you plan to run.
3. Avoid overloading: Ensure the total wattage of the devices connected doesn’t exceed the generator’s rated capacity. Check both the starting and running wattage of your devices.
4. Use a transfer switch for home backup: If you plan to use the generator for home backup and to connect your generator to your home’s electrical system safely, it’s essential to have a professionally installed transfer switch.
Can I use my A-iPower generator in wet conditions?
A-iPower generators are designed to operate outdoors, but you should never operate them in wet conditions or near water sources like rain, puddles, or wet ground. Water can cause electrical shorts or damage. Always use your generator in dry conditions, and if you must use it in a damp area, ensure it’s under a covered, well-ventilated structure like a generator tent or shed. Allow for proper airflow and ventilation and do not cover the generator while it runs.
Can I use an A-iPower generator indoors?
A-iPower generators should never be used indoors or in enclosed spaces due to the risk of carbon monoxide buildup. Always use generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas, at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents, to ensure safe operation.
What is the difference between starting watts and running watts?
Generators have a range of capabilities based on starting watts (the momentary boost of power the generator can supply to start a motor) and running watts (the continuous power a generator can supply).
For example, when a refrigerator or an air conditioner is turned on by a generator, it requires a large amount of power for the start-up process. When the appliance motor reaches full speed, the current declines, which indicates running watts.
When choosing a generator, it’s best to focus on rated wattage to guarantee it will have enough power required for your equipment.
Can I plug the generator into a wall outlet?
Never try to power the house wiring by plugging the generator into a wall outlet, a practice known as “backfeeding.” This is an extremely dangerous practice that presents an electrocution risk to utility workers and neighbors served by the same utility transformer. It also bypasses some of the built-in household protection devices. Either plug appliances directly into the generator with power cords that are in good condition or have an electrician install a certified transfer switch.
What should I check before running a generator that has not been used for a long period?
Make sure you inspect all parts of your generator before starting it to ensure everything is in good working condition. You will first need to check and clean the carburetor for your generator to work smoothly. Check the spark plug and the oil level before starting as well. Most importantly, take your generator out into a well-ventilated, open space before starting it up. Regularly running your generator will also help keep it in good working condition.
Where is a safe location to put my generator?
Generators release exhaust that contains harmful fumes, such as carbon monoxide. That’s why it is important to make sure the generator is placed outdoors while in use. Position your generator away from any doors or windows to prevent exhaust fumes from getting into your home. Never operate your generator inside your home, garage, basement, or any enclosed area.
Also make sure to protect your generator from moisture, rain, and snow as it could produce an electrical shock if it comes in contact with water.
Parts of your generator can become very hot during use, so it is important to keep it away from any flammable materials. Place your generator at least three feet away from any buildings while in use.
Will I need to replace any of the parts in my portable generator?
It is important to regularly check the fuel filter, air filter, carburetor, and spark plug for any damage and replace them immediately.
